How to Purchase a Used Car

Posted on

The most significant challenge when purchasing a used car is that you will have a considerable number of cars to choose from. It is hence challenging difficult to single out a car from the hundreds of vehicles on sale. This guide offers some valuable tips on how to buy a used car.

Choose a Model

The easiest way to choose a specific model is by deciding the class of vehicle that you intend to purchase. For instance, you may need an SUV, saloon, truck, pickup or convertible. Below are some tips to assist you in deciding the model that suits you best:

  • Examine the reputation of the various models. When purchasing a used car, you will not get a manufacturer's warranty. Therefore, you need a vehicle that can go thousands of kilometres without developing any mechanical issues.
  • Check the availability of replacement parts. You do not want your vehicle spending days in a garage since you cannot source spare parts.
  • What makes the car stand out? Simple features such as traction control, 4WD abilities, heated seats and a sunroof could compel you to go for a specific model.
  • Examine the resale value and demand of the vehicle. After all, you should get a decent amount if you sell the car.

Check the Condition of the Vehicles

Narrow your search to a few vehicles on sale within your locality. Ask the sellers to send pictures of the vehicles. This initial assessment will help you establish the general condition of the cars. For example, you can identify cars with accident damage and leaking engines. If you are satisfied with the condition of the cars, visit the sellers to establish the mechanical condition of the vehicles. Drive for a few kilometres to determine if it has engine, transmission and braking issues. Do not be frightened by minor issues such as worn out bushes, minor scratches on the body or torn seats. Remember, used cars will have some wear and tear.

Assess the Pricing

The rule of thumb is that the vehicle should be reasonably priced. Check the average price of similar car models to determine if the seller's asking price is within the market rates. Negotiate the asking price by using the car's defects to ask for a price cut.

Assess the car's documentation to ensure it is registered in the seller's name. Besides, ask for service records. They are a guarantee that the seller followed the logbook maintenance schedule. Additionally, they will help you conduct future repairs.
